What Is The Difference Between Malleable Iron Pipe Fittings And Forged Iron Pipe Fittings?
We often get such questions from our customers, and they often try to determine whether they should use malleable iron fittings or forged iron threaded fittings or socket welding fittings. Malleable iron pipe fittings are lighter pipe fittings with pressure ratings of 150# and 300#. They are made for light industry and pipeline use up to 300 psi. Some malleable castings, such as floor flanges, horizontal tees, street tees, and round head tees, are not common in forged iron.
Malleable cast iron has ductility commonly used in lighter industries. Malleable cast iron pipe fitting is not suitable for welding (if you ever need to weld something to it).
Malleable cast iron pipe fittings, also called black iron pipe fittings, have nominal pipe sizes up to 6 inches, although they are more commonly 4 inches. Malleable pipe fittings include elbows, tees, couplings and floor flanges. Floor flanges are very commonly used to secure objects to the ground.
There are two types of forged iron pipe fittings: socket welded pipe fittings and threaded pipe fittings. Forged parts are made of A105 (carbon steel), stainless steel or nickel alloy. These fittings are thicker and heavier and are used in heavy industry. The forged iron pipe fittings have 2000#, 3000#, 6000# and 9000# pressure ratings. These fittings are more commonly 3000# and 6000# (90% of the time). The nominal pipe size of threaded pipe fittings and socket welded pipe fittings can be up to 4 inches.
Compared with malleable iron or butt welded fittings, forged iron threaded or socket welded fittings are more expensive than 2 inches in size.
There are differences between malleable cast iron pipe fittings and threaded pipe fittings in terms of material metallurgy, pressure rating and application. For the intended application, it is important to choose between them appropriately.
